Getting started

  1. 1Pick the editor or a quick tool

Choose Open the editor to work on a whole document, or one of the quick tools above when you only need a single job done, such as a word count or a PDF of a DOCX.

  2. 2Start blank or bring a file

Begin with an empty page or a template, or open a DOCX, TXT, Markdown or HTML file. You see real pages with margins, headers and page breaks, exactly as they will print.

  3. 3Keep your work

Save as DOCX for anyone using another word processor, or export a PDF. Sign in to Zotu and your documents live in your cloud storage, ready on your next device.

Why people use Zotu Documents

DOCX in, DOCX out

Files stay in DOCX from start to finish. Parts of a file the editor cannot display are carried through on save instead of being silently dropped.

Print layout on screen

Pages, margins, headers and footers, page numbers, footnotes and hyphenation appear as you type. The PDF matches the screen.

Real review tools

Track changes, threaded comments, side-by-side compare and a file version history cover the back-and-forth of contracts, papers and proposals.

Runs anywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPad and Android. There is nothing to install or update.

Free to use

The editor and the quick tools are free. No feature sits behind a paywall and no export is watermarked.

Optional AI assistant

Connect AI if you want it to shorten, rewrite or translate a selection. It only sees the text you choose and never changes the page until you accept.

Inside the editor

The quick tools do one thing well. The editor is for documents that go through drafts, edits and sign-off before they are sent.

Formatting

Fonts and paragraph styles, numbered and bulleted lists, heading styles, themes and style sets, drop caps, columns, section breaks, watermarks and page color.

Tables and graphics

Styled tables with formulas, pictures with text wrapping, shapes, text boxes, diagrams, charts and equations, plus pen and highlighter drawing on the page.

References

Tables of contents, footnotes and endnotes, captions, cross-references, citations in APA, MLA, Chicago and other styles, and an index.

Review

Track changes with accept and reject, comments with replies, compare and combine versions, editing restrictions, spell check and a thesaurus.

Mailings

Envelopes, labels and mail merge from a CSV or XLSX recipient list for letters, invitations and certificates.

Output

Save as DOCX, export a PDF with selectable text, a web page, Markdown or plain text, or print with a preview.

How files are handled

Running in a browser does not mean a cut-down editor. Its own layout engine works out line breaks, hyphenation, footnotes and headers, which is why the screen, the printout and the PDF agree, and why a saved DOCX opens cleanly in other word processors.

Signed in, your work saves to Zotu cloud storage as you type and every file keeps a version history. If someone changes the same file from another device, you are asked what to do instead of having their edits overwritten. The quick tools here need no account and read files locally.

Who it is for

Students formatting a term paper with a table of contents, footnotes and a bibliography. Freelancers and small teams negotiating a contract through tracked changes. Teachers and event planners sending personalized letters or printing labels. Anyone who receives a DOCX on a computer without an office suite and needs to fix it now.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. The editor and the quick tools cost nothing. A Zotu account is only needed to keep documents in cloud storage.

Which files can I open?

DOCX, plus DOTX templates and DOCM files (macros do not run), plain text, Markdown and HTML. The legacy DOC format is not supported; save it as DOCX in the program that made it.

Will my DOCX formatting survive?

Yes. Styles, lists, tables, headers and footers, footnotes and pictures are read and written back. Anything the editor cannot show is kept in the file unchanged, and you are told when a document contains such parts.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The layout adapts to small screens and the ribbon scrolls with a swipe. Long writing sessions are more comfortable on a tablet or laptop.

Where are my documents stored?

With an account, in your Zotu cloud storage. The quick tools on this site work on files inside your browser and never upload them.

Is there a spell checker?

Yes, with check-as-you-type, a suggestions pane, your own dictionary and a thesaurus.

Can I go back to an earlier version?

Yes. Documents in your cloud storage keep a version history: open an older version as a copy, compare it with the current one or restore it.

How do I get a PDF?

Choose Download, then PDF, in the editor, or use the DOCX to PDF quick tool. The PDF keeps real text you can select and search.
